altering appearance on a single surface?

i have a cube that needs a patterned texture on one surface. what is the easiest way of accomplishing this?

VIEW>COLOR AND APPEARANCE select your color or make a new one, add an image as your texture and apply it to the surface requiring the texture.

i had tried that earlier, but it keeps telling me that the surface i am chosing is not an assembly level quilt. im obv a newb, but i appreciate your patience.

Do what CP said above, but do it in the seperate part. It will update in the assy.
