Hi all,


How can I constrain a spherical ball component onto the top of a tube component. Actualy it is a sperical lens that needs mating to a shoulder in a cylinderical telescope tube.

you may need to create some planes otherwise itshould not be a problem.


If you still are in trouble after trying to assemble with planes created attach the parts here and someone will assemble it for you and attach here so that you can see it.

Attached are 2 components that I would like to constain. Basically the flatter convex surface of the lens needs to be position centrally to the axis of the cylinderical tube (align, coincident, select both axis) and also be constrained so that the lens surface sits on the outer diameter of the chamfered tube. (The lens must sit on the end of the tube with the larger opening.)


I would rather not use addition planes as I would like ProEngineer to tell me the exact position of the lens rather than me position it to another datum.


I'm sure this is simple, but I can never seem to get this to work properly.

Think what you want to do is ...

Constrain the axes.

Select a vertex on the cylinder edge (you'll have to RMB cycle thru choices) and then a convex face on the lens (gives you a point on surf constraint; you can pre-select the constraint type if preferred).
 
I aligned the axis coincident, then mate datum planes oriented (so you can flip the lens over) and then did a point on a surface. It worked fine for the smaller radius surface but for some reason I kept getting invalid constraints with the larger radius surface that you want. I don't see anything invalid about that. You could put a datum curve on that surface the ID of the tube and create a datum plane through the curve that you can use to mate to the tube but that should not be necessary. I would contact PTC support because either surface should be valid for point on a surface contact.View attachment 1634
 
Yes, it does seem to get it's undergarments in a wad over that.

What does seem to work coherently is applying the planar orient constraint after the aligned axes and point on surf.
