auto interiors

I am putting together a hybrid
surfacing workshop for auto interiors and hoped for some suggestions in course
materials. I listed some out below but want to ask for suggestions .... My
initial idea is that this workshop would be for engineers working with
industrial designers, so much of the initial discussions would be for capturing
form that id'ers communicate form using Alias Studio. (engineers try to remodel
the forms and fail but don't understand why they fail)

I am thinking this to be a 2 or 5 day workshop and would
couple tips and tricks within Alias Studio, Pro/ENGIENER, Solidworks, any
relative CAD tool.

Auto Interior Surfacing< main heading

steering, dash, console design, ductwork, A and B post,
flooring, electronics and controls. Can discuss seating.

Workshops:

A-class surfacing, Light reflections, making objects
appear smaller than they are thru the use of light and shadow.

tips and tricks for surfacing

capturing form vs proving form

Discussions:

Reverse engineering - restyle, ISDX, Alias Studio

PLA – Discuss use of biodegradable plastics with respect
to auto interiors. Pros and cons. NatureWorks Plastic Injection for
temperatures lower that 130 degrees (mostly cons)

Discuss automobile interiors and compare to tractor or bus
interiors.

Discuss operator controls and functions.

Discuss prototyping

Discuss materials - rubbers, leathers and plastics for
long term use with respect to extreme elements ie. cold and hot

I was hoping that this forum might suggest other topics -
discussions - and software related tips and tricks.

Design-engine,

I did not see Catia listed as one of your cad softwares. If I am not mistaken it is quite popular in automotive design and manufacturing. (we use it here to interface with an auto manufacturer). Is your training to be in methods that can duplicate the functions of catia using pro-e and alias?

We do get other ID designs in pro-e, as surfaces, that need to be translated into actual parts and have that "why does it fail" issue. It might be helpful to look at what the controls are to tweak a surface for things like undercuts and manufacturability. We spend alot of time rehashing the design with the end customer to make it moldable or manufacturable. Perhaps you are looking more at the ID side with graphic design presentation of the model?

thanks,

M

No we do have a few people in our group that know Catia but the demand for jobs and it's use is not so wide. At least in the USA as far as I can tell.

I will add undercuts and manufacturability to my list. I already plan to focuson ID side and did think of the graphic design part. You mean for controls for heat and Cool or console graphics for dials and knobs?

Design-Engine,

Controls in the sense of the way to manipulate a surface to change its shape without causing it to fail. It is not always apparent in someone else's model what is built in for controlling tangency or shape. Everyone tends to model in their own way that is not always easy to decipher by the next person that works on the file. Not necessarily a specific automotive device such as a control for heating or cooling as you mentioned.

cheers...

I know Volvo trucks uses Catia on their Cabs and so does one company in Wisconsin that makes armored truck and their Cabs. Lots of composite materials etc going on there. Most tractor companies use Pro/E except John Deere's old guys. Most of them still use Catia. Not sure if there is enough demand for Catia training in the States. I wonder how Rand stays a float. Don't they sell Catia and it's respective training?
