Autodesk & PTC are making friends ?

Hi guys,

I recently attended a wildfire 4.0 launch seminar ( went for the free lunch

) I heard a rumour whilst there that AutoDesk and PTC have been in discussions regarding compatability and working together etc.

Anybody know anymore about this. Can we ageing AutoCAD users expect a more friendly sketcher environment in the future

? I still hate detailing my 2D drawings in Pro-e!

PTC and Alias have always talked to each other. Not that Autodesk made the purchase and let all the top management go .... one would wonder if the talks are still open.

anyone going to the indy500? call me if you are.

Well, I did find drafting in Proe painful in the begining, but as I persisted with it, it was no more a pain or I would say the pain reduced. As a result of a process audit, I began designing the way I want the final drawing to be (Design Intent).

Yes there is still room for improvement though.

Someone will prefer "Autocad" a good tool for detailingif theyuse keyboard shortcuts.

Someone will prefer "Pro-E" a good tool for detailingif theyuse mapkeys. But i feel better pro-e is gud for detailing.

except modelling sketcher in Pro-E.

If we can detail 2D drawings like AutoCad, Pro-e will the perfect tool.

Pro/E would then be bearable. Actually, SW already has Autocad functionality. So, PTC is at best playing catch up.

I am sure PTC talks to everyone. Autodesk is probably the easer to talk too. I think PTC even owns a copy of Solidworks.

PTC have entered into an agreement with AutoDesk to have "Interoperability"from Pro/E to Inventor and vice-versa without losing menu structure.

Autodesk are starting to use the Granite Kernel in the latest version of Inventor. I have not heard when thefull interoperability will begin.

Autodesk are also looking at PTC in another light.....TO PURCHASE???????

I don't think Autodesk gots that kind of cash. I guess that is all public knowledge. I took the day off when Autodesk made the purchase for Alias and Maya.

Obviously I have no real idea about this, but I tend to agree with Bart here, I doubt if Autodesk would have that sort of funding to buy PTC ? But.. who knows !

Would love it to happen tho, cos I still am no fan of the detailing in pro-e.

Skint,

I have yet to find anyone who is a fan of ProE detailing, even the most hardened supporters find it a giant sized pain in the a**e. For years I have wondered why it seems so hard for PTC to get it through its thick skull that detailing is a vital part of the design process (last I heard most people tend to use drawings to communicate to the outside engineering world, and yes we will have the paper-less office etc. etc. etc., but I rather keep breathing than wait for that one.....bueracratic life wins every time as far as I can see). However I have been told by 'a man in the know' that Autodesk have locked a lot of their design interface behind some pretty heavy lawyers briefcases (competative advantage and all that) and basically PTC have not come up with a better solution/idea to compete against the 'Autocad detailing format'.

And so ends my $0.02 (I wish there was a European equivalent to this phrase)

Thanks Kev, im glad its just not me

Bart asked me in another thread " Skint, why on earth are you buying autocad ". Well this is exactly why, pro-e is excellent for generating the 2d views, the sections etc..theres no doubt, but for detailing yeah, a complete pain in the arse. So for now, and until a large change happens with pro-e, I will continue to do most of my detailing in Good O`l Trusty Cad.

Damn I bet autodesk love these discussions ! PLEASE Communicate with PTC and become best friends

Skint,

You use ACAD for your drafting, but on a slightly different tack (and to be honest this the only true use of ACAD data that I have seen) have you looked at Autobuildz. Seems to be the sort of thing that is good for new users, but a little slow and cumbersome for expert users.

Kev

PS Check it out on PTC's website for a demo/online presentation, but be warned that you will get a call from PTC to see how satisfied you were with the demo etc..... turned out to be quite a good time to have a whinge at them for me!

I've read a lot of whinning here about detailing in ProE but nothing specific. If you do just a little planning when making the model, all you need to do is hit the Show/Erase button and do a bit of clean up. What about ProE detailing bugs you?

What's so great about autocad? Exporting to a dumb 2D for detailing seems a complete waist of time to me. Don't you ever have to make geometry changes?

We did that about 15 years ago before there was a Pro/Detail module. I would consider that a huge step backwards today.
