Cam modelling

Hi,

I have the profile data of a cam.. that is 2 column excel data file which has theta values in the first column and radius values in the second. I am trying to model this in ProE WF 3.0. I searched the forum and google for help on importing excel data into the model. But none of what i tried seem to work at all!

The Insert -> Model Datum -> Point -> Offset Coord. system window does not allow me to import any file or add any points manually either!

Could someone please help me out with this? I need to basically draw a 2d closed curve when given the radius and theta values. I will then extrude it to get the cam.

Sandeep.

Sandeep,

Couple of things.

1. You need to have 3rd column for Z-axis. You can put value of "0" for Z axis.

2. I don't know if WF3 will import Excel file (WF2 does not). You can copy the values from Excel and paste into notepad. Save the files as "filename.pts"

You should be able to import "filename.pts"

Good luck.

Charles is right with what he said, and it needs to be called *.pts.

One last bit of information is that you are limited to the number you can bring in if you use create dimensions.

Since you have the points in excel, you must certainly have defineda formula for getting the relation between the radius and the angle. You can also define a datum curve with an equation in Proe.Look into it.

Further, I believe this is for a Plate cam. If so, you can import the data into Autocad, define Raise, Dwell and Fall in autoCAD or any 2D package and then import the file into Proe. Many puritans may not agree to this method, but then it is effective.
