We are about to switch from Intralink 3.4 to Windchill. We are using a consultant to help us with the migration. The consultant is telling us that prior to the migration we "must populate the "Common Name" field for all objects" (we don't currently use this attribute). "If an objects
 
You should be able to set the common name to whatever your current Name parameter or file name is.


PTC_COMMON_NAME=&PARAM_NAME or something very similar as a relation.

Yes, but the migration tool doesn't actually read the files. It merely imports with common rules. One of the rules is that PTC_COMMON_NAME will inherit the filename.
 
Maybe you hired the wrong Consultant, and he just wants you to pay him for more hours?

PTC Common name is the descriptive name field in Pro/E. Up until WF 2.0, it was an exposed parameter. WF 3.0 and later made it a Windchill controlled parameter. You can see the common name in a column, by typing it in, in the name field and hitting enter.


Having a descriptive name is highly desirable in any PDM system, especially since it's not limited to 32 characters like the file name and number.


BTW, by default, the "Name" in PDMLink is = the Common Name in Pro/E
