Conic Rho

I have a question regarding the conic rho value in a sketch. I use conics quite a bit, and I am familiar with the basics. I know to use sqrt(2)-1 to get a perfect ellipse. I have been looking into the conic equations more in depth, ultimately I would like to recreate the conic curve imperially with excel. But I have not seen a conic equation that is a function of rho. Does anyone know the conic equation that uses rho?
