copy part new values

Here's an example: I have a rod, and it has a diameter D and a length L. I want to have the part saved somewhere with some default dimensions for D and L. I want to then be able to retrieve the rod when I use create component by copy (in an assembly) and I want pro/e to ask me to set the dimensions D and L for the copied part. Basically I want a shortcut for inserting the copied rod then editing the dimensions manually.

I don't want to enter the values on each regen (nor have to click the "use current values" in some programmed parts I've seen). I just want to set the dims once--when I copy it to the assembly.

I don't want to use a family table since the values are not known until I am ready to copy the part.

Is there a standard/good way of doing this in Pro/E?

Thanks!

Solution 1:

If you create a new part using the file->new instead of the create in assembly mode then you can have parameters that are "designate" that you specify upon creation. Unfortunatly if you create by copy in assembly mode you dont get the same menu. So solution 1 make the part as normal to generate the new size then assembly an existing component

Solution 2:

Place the model at the default size then have a mapkey that activates the part and then takes you to the parameters or relations, depending on how you want to drive the size to edit it. Then have a mapkey that regenerates the model and re-activates the assembly.

solution 2 would keep you in the assembly

Another possibility might be to create a flexible part. Depending on the version you are using ProE will ask if you want to use the flexiblity of the component after you select the file to copy from and may show a dialog box with the dimesions you can change.
