Copying Surfaces from an Assembly

Can someone help me out here?

I'm new to Wildfire 2.0...

Our customer has sent us a very large (270MB) Wildfire 2.0 model. I need to export a couple of surfaces to an IGES file so that I can import those surfaces into Catia V5.

Creating an IGES of this huge model will take forever.

In the past, they have sent Pro/E 2001 files. So, what I would do is just create an assembly, insert their part into the assembly, then create an empty part and assemble it to the default coordinate system. Then, in the assembly, I could modify the part, and do Feature-->Create-->Surface-->New-->Copy and just select the surfaces that I needed.

Then, I could save this part, and export it to IGES. Typically, the surfaces the part file with just the surfaces I need is about 1MB (much better than 270MB!).

How can I do this in Wildfire 2.0? I can't for the life of me figure it out. I've set the empty part as the active model - but I can't figure out how to copy the surfaces from the other model into the empty model. Is this still possible?

I thought of making a shrinkwrap model, but I don't think that's going to be any faster at this point.

First, select Edit > Select > Preferences > check 'Preselection highlighting". Make sure 'Smart' is showing in the box that's in the lower right hand corner. Next, position your mouse on the the surface to be selected until it automatically turns blue. Click once until it turns red. Move the mouse over slighty until the surface edges are highlighted in blue. Click again and your surface will be highlighted in red & selected for copying. Finally select Edit > Copy, then select Edit > Paste.

In the assembly of the customer's model and yours,
activate your new part and Insert-> Shared Data -> Copy Geometry and Define your Surface references. You can toggle the surfaces to be Dependent or Independent of the original model. Ofcourse, you need to have Pro/E Advanced Assembly module for this.

If you don't have it, you won't see the 'Copy Geometry' option highlighted. In that case, activate the model, select one surface from the original model and then
Edit -> Copy & Paste it. Once you do that you can hold the Ctrl key and select as many surfaces as you need. The only difference with 'Copy Geometry' being you cannot make them to be independent of the original geometry.

Good luck!

Hi,

Thanks that definitely helped. I think the problem was that I wasn't able to select anything initially.

After holding down the right mouse button, and selecting the surface that I wanted from the list, I was able to copy, then paste into the new model (and use the CTRL key to select the other surfaces).

Thanks everyone!!!
