creating prt file from large assembly

I have a large assembly & I am trying to make a prt file of the entire assembly with just the external surfaces or geometry. I know there has to be an easy way to do this. I created a part file inside the assembly & activated it then tried to merge the parts together but it didn't work well. Does anyone have any suggestions?

"... has to be an easy way ..."

What's your definition of "easy"?

Look into Shrinkwraps and Envelope Parts.

For a "large" (again, undefined) assy there might not be a "good" automatic solution.

Thanks for the reply.

I mean easy as in instead of selecting all the surfaces.

I tried to shrinkwrap but it is missing edges and some surfaces.

That's the nature of a surf subset shrinkwrap. You might be able to use a different option; merged solid (?) but I don't ~think~ that will obliterate any detail.

The difficulty of making it "easy" is guessing what you want to obliterate while still keeping it "solid".

I don't really know much about the subject, but suspect there's an element of marketing myth involved. Maybe someone that really "knows" something will jump in. Might help them if you'll post a pic or something so they have an idea of what you are working with?

I was able to do it using the shrinkwrap. I just have to choose a higher level to get all the fine edges. It takes a little longer to regenerate.
