There are different level of customization, basic being family table,second level is using proprogram(both require knowledge of Pro E).the third level is using toolkit and jlink for which you should have the knowledge of vc++ and java respectively.you can get the general codes in the tollkit install directory.
Customization could also pertain to making mapkeys, showing different icons, making new menus, customizing your model tree, changing config options and so forth....
