dimensions when modeling a part in assemb

Checkmate

New member
Hi, i am trying to model a part in assembly mode but there doesn't seem to be the same setup options in the edit menu so i can access and change the units of dimensions. i need to change the units to mm, how do i do this? i am using wildfire 1,

thanks, Checkmate

Hi,

If you want to change the units associated with a part that was created in asm mode then follow the following steps.

1. Select the component<rmb<open.

2.go to Edit<setup<units

3. change the units according to your company standard.

4. click on "convert dimensions" when the "changing model units" window popup.

5. ok.

u can see the unit is changed but the size of the part remains same in the asm.

yea thanks,

it actually seems though that when creating a part in assembly mode it is not actually possible to set the units for that part before it has been created, proe seems to just take the default units and there is no setup option in the edit menu until you have created the part and then you can, as you said, open that part and then change its units and edit it. is there no way around this so that it can be all done at once while in assembly mode, that would be so much easier!?

thanks,

Do you or your company have a part template, assembly template?

When creating a part in assembly mode you should have the possibility to select your template. As the template has the correct units you should have no issues then.

no i didn't know about that, how do i go about setting one up? does a template also sort out a default cordinate system as well?

Hey,

You just create a new part, uncheck 'use default template'. In the 'new file options' double click on empty. You then get a blank part. Add a coord system (your default coord system as you describe it) and add three datum planes, rename them to front top and right (or what you prefer. Setup the units (edit setup units). Save this file under a folder 'startmodels' locally or on your company server (the name of the part could be something like startpart.prt. Do the same for a assembly and name it startassy.asm, save that under the same folder as described before. In these files you also set the typical parameters for your company etc

Now the config.pro should have a option start_model_dir and direct it to the folder described before (eg : c:\ptc\setup\startmodels)

In the config also add template_solidpart c:\ptc\setup\startmodels\startpart.prt and template_designasm c:\ptc\setup\startmodels\startassy.asm .

Whenever you create a new part or assembly you can leave the 'use default' checked and it will use the ones i mentioned above. (You can create the same for a default sheetmetal part, drawing, .. etc)

I do hope you knowhow to setup configs and how to load them. If not start proe, goto tools, options. Now you see the config i was talking about, add the lines above and save it. When the save box opens, it shows you what config proe loaded when you started it.

hi,

thanks very much for that, it apears that i do not have a new file options section or dialog box in my new file dialog box, there is a type and sub type menus but there is no empty option in any of these, i am using WF1 so i don't know if that makes a difference? or should i be looking for the new file options somewhere else?

thanks,

there is a difference in creating a part with 'file new' and creating a new part while your in a assembly.

I usually create a new part with file new and then assemble it default in the assembly.

If like you create a new part in assembly you should get the following box enter your name and press ok

After that you get a new box.

When you have added the options from my previous post keep 'copy from existing' selected .

Next to browse (again if the options are added) you should see the startmodel.prt name if thats the case press ok and you use the template you created before. If not press browse and browse to the startmodel.prt file.
