draging datums

I've created a box, with a lid hinged on one side. I can drag the lid open and closed. Now, I would like a datum point that floats in air. In my imagination, this would be created on a datum plane that is hinged on the same axis as the lid and box, with a reference to the angle of lid/2. I just can't seem to think of away to dimension the angle of the lid that would allow me to reference it.

I am creating a door that opens on one side. and a wire that connects between the two, but will represent the correct shape as the door opens and closes. and to make things difficult, the hinges (an existing design) are not right on the edge of the door, it's about an inch away.
