DRAWING PARAMETER

One simple question here..

I have a parameter Description in the Part. Say I will enter Description Value : TEST123.

I would like to have the same value in the Drawing Parameter also. In Drawing, I can get the parameter Description but I dont want to again type the description, it should automatically pull the description entered in part. Please guide me how to achive this.

Also after the description populates in the drawing and observing there is a spelling mistake, I will correct it in drawing which should automatically correct in part description also. How to achive this ?

Appriciate for the quick response.

Hi Srini,

Tnx for your response, but my question is not bringing the parameter value inside the drawing, I want it in Parameters only. Part parameter will have Description in tools-parameters. Similarly in drawing, in tools- parameters, it should come automatically. Is it possible ?

Rgds,

I don't know whether I understood your requirement
correctly. When you type "&description" in the drawing, it
would pull in the parameter from the part into the
drawing. When you double-click on the same and edit, the
description value in the part parameter too would change.
Pro/E is not open on my desk right now. Hence, try it out.

The only place in a drawing I'm aware of that would give you what you are looking for isa repeat region. However, as Srini mentions if the parameter is already in the part there is no need to duplicate in the drawing. Because of the bi-directional associativity of parameters you can change it in one place and it will update in the other. For drawings, depending on your settings, you may need to update the sheets before seeing the change.

I think the
question is:

Can you have the same parameter in the drawing and as well in the part?

When you use a PDM solution, and you search for a parameter of a part,

for example the 'description), you only get the part, and not the drawing.

Because the parameter "description" is only designated to the part.

This is not really true. Description exists for all objects in Intralink or Windchill. It is all in how it is set up within the templates and the PDM solution. You can also create your own parameters and designate them.

To answer the question. I had researched this in depth quite some time ago. There is a way to do it using Pro/Program but it became too cumbersome and unpredictable to use. Particularly when wanting to make changes. With me, these parameters rarely stay the same as when I originally created them. So, the ability to carry this on when making changes was important.

With the Pro/Program solution it was just too complicated. It obviously had to be set up in the templates to have any efficiency at all and cause more problems that it solved. So, I opted to continue.

However, you can select allthe appropriate parametersin the part and past them to the drawing parameters. It will create any that don't exist and fill it them all with the part values.

One caveat is that if the drawing has already been saved to the Windchill database, you cannot past to the drawing. It will work the otherway around though. (Copy from drawing to part/assembly)

For me this is much more efficient than the Pro/Program solution.
