Mass is just the total mass of an assembly (the mass of each component summed).
Average Density is the total mass of an assembly divided by the total solid mass in that assembly. It's a good number to look at if you've got a large weldment and want to make sure that the density of all parts is set correctly... If the average density of the assembly is not equal to steel in the case, you know that at least one part has an incorrect density.
