Extrude cut on a cylinder face?

I have a need to perform an extrude cut (through all) in the wall of a cylinder.

I created the part by drawing a circle in 2D and then extruding the circle to form a solid cylinder. Then, I create a second sketch of a smaller concentric circle within one end face of the cylinder and do an extrude cut (through all) to form a hollow cylinder. Now I need to create U-shaped 'notches' in one end of the cylinder but can't seem to figure out how to do it.

I assume that if I could create one notch, then I would just use the circular pattern function to replicate the notch X times around the cylinders axis. How do I create that first notch? I would like to combine a circle and a rectangle, but I can't seem to draw and select them for the extrude cut.

TIA

John
