It may not necessarily be the best or most elegant way to do it, but I normally do it this way.
The reason I do it this way is because you cannot use the extrude-surface option to extrude a sketched region that is text.
So, first create a surface offset from my base surface the distance I want the text to be embossed (or engraved if it is into the part).
Then, I create a plane in space above my curved surface. I just extrude the text onto the surface. lastly, I cut the extruded text using the offset surface. normally I just use the same sketch plane that the text is located on and extrude up to surface and select my offset surface.
it may not be elegant, but it seems to work. Why I can use a sketch as an offset but not text is beyond me.
Let's say you have a solid model. Highlight the surface you want the text on, and copy it in it's place (thus creating a surface there) With your text projected onto that surface (from some floating datum plane), you may usethe textto trim that surface, thus isolating the text footprint. Thickening those surfaces will automatically give you a solid entity whan you're done. Keep an eye on what surfaces are kept with each trim, and you should end up with no surfaces left after the last thicken.
This gets very time consuming with lots of text, but it's yet another way.
