Flexible Spring

hi
Can any one tell how to make the spring in WF3 with varying dimensions one dimension is compressed length and other will be free length

It kind of depends on what you want to do with the spring, but there are a few options.


1. Make the spring a flexible component


2. Make a family table

I don't have WF3, but I'm going to take a flyer and go with....


I the assembly, choose the spring and RMB, then choose 'Make Flexible'


Give that a try and see what happens.

Yes in assembly when i insert the component we have the option Make Flexible there we can select the dimensions from the part which we want to keep as flexible.

But is it possible to make this in Part mode

Because some time back i had done this but not able to make that out how i had done

Sounds like you should be using a family table to me.

EDIT:- Can you explain in a bit more detail what you are trying to achieve. What I am guessing is that you are trying to put both the compressed and uncompressed spring into an assembly at two diferent locations. If so, then the above is the way I would tackle the problem

What I do for springs is model the spring at the free length, then set the length as the predefined flexible dimension (edit-setup-flexibility). When the spring is assembled, you are prompted for the length (I use the distance method, selecting the planes at either end to define the distance the spring is compressed.) I have done similar things with torsion springs and o-rings.

That sort of application is exactly suited to a flexible component as described by myself and Peter....

PS I'm still not sure what you meant by 'Because some time back i had done this but not able to make that out how i had done', I'm wondering are you looking at ProMechanica rather than assembly......?????
 
Just a note to clarify things (hopefully).

Use family tables in part mode to have multiple springs with different sizes (length, number of turns, diameter, etc.). Each instance will have a unique part name.

Use flexible components in assembly mode to show your spring(s) in compressed or extended state(s). This way you can maintain the same part name for your part in the free state and the assembled state. This solves many problems with BOM where you need the same part to look different.

As a follow up to Dr-Gallup's comment, one issue I know of in WF (not sure for WF3, but clarification would be appreciated) with respect to flexible components. In drawing mode attaching BoM balloons (with qty) doesn't work and there is no way of fixing the position of the flexible comp. in the BoM table.

A workaround the problem with BOM ballons is to make the compoment not flexible. Shoe the ballon, and remake itflexible.
