gear teeth

I am a wildfire guy (so no I don't have 10 yrsof pro E experience)....My new job only has 2001 release.....I need to model a gear...in wildfire I can do an array and I'm done....in this one...I CAN'T do it!....how would you pros go about modeling a gear with teeth....I need a simple gear with 12 teeth...whats the best way to do this? someone here said to a circle...extrude that....then make multiple cuts!!!! there must be a more efficient way...how! thanks guys!!!

Look in the files area of this site for gear files which are 2001 or older versions. Find one where you can modify the number of teeth and circular pitch at a minimum.

Pro/E 2001 is using a dimension pattern type.. So if you want to pattern a circular type of pattern, you will need to create an angular dimension 1st.

For Gear, I'would suggest you to create an angular datum plane on the fly, and create the extrude/cut feature reference to it.

Create the datum on the fly will give you a group in model tree. You can pattern the group by using the angular dimension..

em.. very hard to explain in words.. hope you can get it..

My suggestion would be to use Surfacing. I would expect you'd have problems trying to pattern an involute gear tooth, depending upon how you'd modelled it. Start with your base diameter and create your gear tooth profile. You don't need to pay any attention to datums-on-the-fly at this stage. Once created, create a copy of the surfaces to be patterned and roationally transform '0' degrees. Now, you can select the transformed surface and pattern this around the base diameter. You can add to the relations somenthing like

d=360/p

where d is your increment angle and p is the pattern value.

Hope this helps,

Phil
