Helical Sweep around an irregular shape

Hi, Everyone and thanks in advance for any andallhelp.

Someone came to me and asked me about how to create windings around an irregular shaped core. The core will be rectangular but with chamfered corners. So it will have 8 flat sides. I suspect a helical sweep has to be the answer, but I don't do HS very often and the ones I've done have been pretty simple winding about a round core. How would you place windings around an irregular shape like I've described?

Thanks again, SrG.

I don't know if this is the best way to do it, but you could create an octogonal protruded surface, then wrap an angled line sketch around it. Then hide the surface and use the wrapped sketch as your trajectory for a sweep. I don't think you could use a VSS because all segments are not tangent, unless you round the edges of the original shape.

1 - Create the cone as a surface

2 - Create a helical surface with the required pitch. Basically, it'l be like a line swept along the helix

3 - where the helical surface and the cone surface interfere, use the intersect tool to create a 3D line which will be used as the sweep path

4 - Sweep yuo profile along this 3D line and that should be it

Hope that makes sense

Michael,

I may be a little confused when you say inyour response"Create the cone..." . There isn't a cone involved. The core is a straight protruded rectangle with the four corners chamfered.

Thanks,

Michael,

Yes, I understand now that there needs to be a octagonal extruded surface, then a helical sweep surface around that, then the intersection of the two surfaces becomes my sweep path. Instead of doing a helical sweep protrusion, it is a swept protrution witharound (wire size) sketch.

Thanks, SrG.

Okay, I have a helical sweep surface revolving around a rectangular box. Now how do I create a curve at the intersection of two surfaces? Sorry, I'm not real familiar working withsurfaces.

Thanks, SrG.

See my video demo above.

Select the two items in the model tree and then Edit --> Intersect

Thanks, I got it done and it looks surprisingly like the fellow needed. He will just need to tweak the dimensions to suit his need.

Thanks again. SrG.
