Help a noob again - Mirroring or Handing

[-Skint-]

Hi All,

May I ask you a question :

Q. What is the best way to "Hand" a part ? I mean, I have a part that I have created, and now I want to create the oposite hand ( a mirrored part if you like ).

The only was I have managed this so far is to - Save a copy of the original part - Mirror the entire part through a centred datum plane - and then extrude out the original piece.

This sounds very long winded and wrong to me, what is the correct way of doing this.

Thanks in advance

I would create a component in assmebly. Assembly your component in an assembly and then insert>component>create. There you can select to mirror it and what name you want to call it.

Create an empty assembly(no dtm planes, no features at all), assemble thepart you wish to mirror into this assembly.

Create a component>mirror, click use reference, point to the part, point to adtm plane about which to mirror, voila, you have a mirror part in the assembly.

Now, open this new part in a new window, make the assembly window active again,
delete the assembly, make the new part window active, and save it.

The mirrored part will update with the old one upon regeneration.

Thankyou very much for your help, I have tried this today and so far so good.

Everyday I am learning more and more about pro-e thanks to this forum.

The easiest way to mirror without having to create an assembly is to click on first part name in your model tree (it should the your part name.prt). Once you click on that you should get your mirror function to un-gray. Have a preexisting centerline plane already setup or set one up in the mirror feature. That will mirror all geometry on that side of the plane. keep in mind, if your model isnt completely on the original side of the plain the mirror will fail so if it does, do an entire cut of the part from that plane. This is how I mirror my car parts.

Hi CP,

That is how I have been creating my handed parts, but it just feels wrong. I guess what I am starting to learn about pro-e is that .. there is no right or wrong way of doing anything ? There are many different ways of achieving the same thing, and its up to the user to get the results he wants however he wants.

Its been a month since I started using pro-e, I believe I am getting more confortable with the basics now. My next goal is to try and learn surfacing, but I am also trying to get my job done at the same time so I have to learn something as and when I get chance.

Thanks for you help.

There are easily 20+ different ways to do things in Pro, some are easier and some are harder but all will achieve the same affect. I just rpefer not to make separate parts for simple mirrored geometry. Too many useless parts to track especially if you want to update the mirror.
