bottle designers almost always start with 2d photoshop end and profile image.If you think you have what it takes to be a bottle designer (and they use Pro/E) you should apply to Scott Jost at Berlin packaging. They are the top dowgs at the moment in bottle design BTW.The design portion of the firm is called studio111 and they are based out of Chicago. They have hired several ID'ers who participated in our four week comprehensive workshops http://www.studio111design.com/ and continually send id'ers for training.... as they have this week.
