how to show balloons with no duplicates

I'm using 2001 (still) and can not for the life of me figure out how to
get around a specific problem with repeat regions and showing balloons.
This problem has been mentioned before, but I've never found a solution.

The issue is with showing balloons for multiple parts when they are
merged in a repeat region due to being identical. I have a complex
assembly with many posts being welded to form a trailer side. Several
parts are assembled into an assembly, and they are then manipulated
with pro/Program to become the proper lengths, suppressed, etc. Part
numbers are then generated for each based on a generic material
identifier and the resulting length.

As windows, doors, ramps, etc are included and dimensions are changed,
several different posts will become in essence the same part (i.e. I
may end up with 10 identical posts that are 22.5" long, even though
they are different parts in the model. In another situation, these 10
parts may all be different lengths).

When the drawing BOM repeat region is regenerated, the parts with
identical part numbers and descriptions are merged as desired. But the
balloons for these won't show due to the index of the combined row
referring to separate part models. My BOM consists of the rpt.index,
rpt.qty, part number (generated via feature relations in each part), a
description, and cost.

Showing duplicates is not an option, and due to the infinite number of
assembly permutations, I'd rather not have to freeze indexs and create
non-parametric balloons every time a drawing is generated. I use custom
balloons, but merging or spliting obviously won't work since the
balloons can't be shown in the first place.

Is there a way to tie the ballons to the generated part number, rather than the underlying model name?

Any ideas greatly appreciated!

i started my carrier in WF

some of the old guys like srini, bart, design engine may be able to help you in this

Instead of having the assembly containing multiple models of what only LOOK like the same part why don't you set up Pro/Program to force the assembly to use EXACTLY the same part via Family tables and Interchange assemblies. If you do this ballooning will be dead easy

Dell_Boy....

I've used that approach many times in the past, but in this case the
complexity and possible number of sizes makes it a bit unyieldy. Just
one post may have hundreds of lengths (to the nearest 32nd of an inch),
and there are over a hundred possible posts. So after the length for
any given post is calculated, I would then have to generate a "smart"
model number to pull from the table.

It's possible to do it this way, but dynamically changing the length of
each part is much simpler... except for the balloon issue of
course :)

And... the model is already built and no time to redo it anyway.

I used to have the same problem using WF2 & WF3, and was unsure of a solution as well. This won't solve your problem immediately, but I noticed now that I've upgraded to WF4, this problem does not happen any longer.

If you weren't on 2001, you could try "Flexible Components" to get the different length part variations to quantify into one listing on the BOM.
