How would one nestle layers

I want to add have a layer that references another layers another turns it on and off as necessary. For example,i have assemblyA, B, C, and D. I would add assembly A to a layer, B to a layer, etc. I could then make a layer that would control say layers B, C, and D, isolating A. It seems simple enough, and the sublayers are added to the one master layer but the master layers doesn't control them. Basically, it is the isolate function from SW done in the cumbersome, a$$ backwards Pro/E way. Say what you will but SW rocks in layer and BOM manipulation.

if you want to learn how to isolate layers see posting by Glen Beer (search for "mastering layers". But if your need is only for visulization, it sounds like what you really want is to define simplified reps. Then you can quickly set which ever rep you want to work with.

Thanks for the reply, but he didn't exactly cover what i need to know and i try to stay away from that posting, it is WAY too big.

As far as what i really want is a good program to work with but since i have Pro/E i need to use layers because Pro/E almost made something good with Simplified Reps almost (almost is apparently there motto). Since I need to have several different configuration all connected to the same BOM i need to use layers. And if possibly, i have overlooked a better way to use simplified reps with the same BOM, why in the hill is it so damn hard to find this info! I wanna spend my time figuring out my design not how to design my design.

If I understand what you want correctly you would add the items to separate layers then create another layerand add the layers that you want to show (isolate). In the assembly you select the layer and select the isolate icon or View>Visibility>Isolate and everything not associated with the layer is treated as hidden. In the drawing with the layers in the model tree select Settings>Drawing Layer Status and make sure that at least the first option is checked. In the model tree you should see the view names for the individual views (you may need to make a selection before you see them listed). Select the view form the drop down, select the layer with the information you want to show, and selct the isolate command as described previously.

My title was a little misleading. Should've been how do i get layers that have been nestled to actually do what i ask them to. I figured out what i need to do and after i beat this deadline I'll let yall know.

jelston, I'm having a hard time following your first post, but here is what I would suggest you try.

Create one layer for each display configuration desired.

layer first_set
components a,b,c,d

layer second_set
components a,b,c,x,y

layer third_set
components d,e,f

Then use the Isolate status, one layer at a time to generate the visualization desired. Note I use the word Isolate to denote the layer status chosen.

edit: some warnings, don't save your assembly with layers isolated, do that only in your drawings.

vs. not using isolate
