Intersect problem

I am trying to use the intersect command in order tocreate a feature. I would think this is a simple operation but it doesn't seem to work at all for me. Currently I have 2 sketches and I just want to intersect them to form a solid. When I create the intersection i just get this

But then i cannot make that into a solid using solidify or fill functions. I've also tried to create the intersect using the two extruded parts but it fails when I go to make the intersect. any suggestions?

Well I ended up solving my problem somewhat I never figured out intersect but if I just flip the arrows around on the second extrude it essentially works the same was as intersect would.

But i'm still curious how to use the intersect function.

The intersect function is used to create curves, whether it is an intersection of 2 surfaces or 2 curves.

Basically if you are trying to model something and you know what the thing looks like from a front view and a side view you can sketch those curves and then intersect them to get some 3D curve that looks like that from the front view and side view.

The intersect feature is used when working with surfaces and curves not with solids.

The help menu is also a good place to look.
