is there a better way

To create the elliptical cut as shown in the attached image and file?

this way just seems to take WAY too many steps to accomplish. I tried to do a swept cut and VSS but failed miserably due to intersecting geometry.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I could create the feature using 2 sketches and one swept cut feature in SW so I'm just looking for a way to reduce the number of features in my tree if possible.

Will not a revolved cut of an ellipse do the same thing in one feature?

You wanted fewer<st1:personName>,</st1:personName> you got fewer.

In spite of what I sent you that would not be my choice either<st1:personName>,</st1:personName> I would have modeled the same way you or Zaki did. I have no fondness for features hanging out in space and prefer to control them with curves.
