Large assembly to one part

I have a large assembly that I would like to make into one part, so it is easier to assemble into some other assemblies. What is a good way to do this. I have triedto save as asrinkwrap, but I am not getting the results I want. What I want as a result, isone soild part. This way I can assign a mass to it. I have also tried exporting as an IGES and reimporting, but I can't get a solid part. The part always hasmissing surfacesthat do not allow me to solidify the part with out going in and fixing every missing surface (there are a lot).

Any ideas?

You can use the "Merge" command in assembly mode and merge all the parts into one large part. There are a couple things you need to know about when doing this.

First, it uses the first part that you pick as the one that gets all the other parts copied into it as features. So what you might want to do is just make a copy of your actual working assembly and then put some small part that you make up in it that will be the first part to be picked and it can be named "Merged-assembly.prt" or whatever makes sense to you.

Second, if you have any assembly features, such as cuts in the assembly it will have problems. So remove any assembly features from your copied assembly before you start merging.

Then when your all done you can open up your original part and it will have all the other parts merged to it and will look like a single part to Pro/E.

Hope that helps.

I found the merg operation, but it won't let me pick the subassemblies. Can you merg subassembies all into the main assembly?

That's a good question. I would imagine that you can go into each sub assembly first and do a merge for each of them before merging in the top level assembly. I don't think you can merge parts from the subassembly into the top level assembly directly.

shrinkwrap

a solid shrinkwrap? i thought shrinkwrap was only surfaces...?

cool, you learn something every day :)

yes, I have tried a shrinkwrap, but there are always surfaces missing so I can't solidify the model. On other models, I have gone in and added the surfaces, but in this case there are very many. That is why I was asking to see if there is a better way, or an other way. When the model is just surfaces, along with effecting my weights, it does not work very well on my prints for section views etc.

Let me know if there are any other ideas.

thanks

i was successfully able to shrinkwrap a complicated assembly with the following settings

u can probably upload the assly under question and then we can come to a conclusion y it cant be shrink wraped

the problem is not the surfaces, the problem is that surfaces are missing.

I tried the merged soild like shown above, but I can't get it to complete. The operation aborts before it is finished.

It seems like the problem is the complexity of this assembly. I would love to upload it, but I can not due to confidentiality agreements.

I will try the STEP export suggestion...

if you create a iges file and is missing surface or have gaps, try fixing it the with the heal geometry tool. first try the automatic and if doesn'r work do it manualy. I haven't try it with others type of file but could work as well. then solidify.
