create or edit an existing layer, go to the rules tab, hit options and check independent and associative. Then click on edit rules and add the rule to add curves. That is the quick explanation

The easiest way to add a new rule based layer is to use the search tool. Configure the search as you need to capture what you want and then select the 'save query' pick under options in the lower right.
