Layers in submodels

SW

New member
I'm trying to set up a layer within an assembly that includes, for example, all part and assembly datum planes. I've set up a rule to do this but get a warning message "Rules cannot be evaluated for submodels of a Layer model." Any suggestions on how to get this to work would be appreciated.

Also, I end up with loads of layers numbered 1, 2...32 in some assemblies that seem to come from nowhere. Anyone got any ideas? I'm using using Wildfire 3.0.

Thanks,

Sam

the layers are number 1,2...32, that are coming from nowhere, are being generated because of a config option you have set. Take a look at your config file and look for option create_numbered_layers yes. This creates the 1-32 layers.

If you create a layer for the assembly and then expand the layer, it should carry through to all the parts, if it says "rules cannot...", look to see if the layers passed down to the parts

Thanks for the config suggestion, that explains it.

I'm still pretty confused about setting up layers to select all my part and
assembly datum planes.

I've got a standard start-part and assembly with a load of default layers
setup. Looking at the layer symbol, these appear to be "Same Name
Layers". If I right-click on the layer the "Layer properties"
option is grayed out. If I expand the layer tree, I've got layer names such as
"...___PRT_ALL_DTM_PLN." but there is nothing on the layer.

If I create a new layer with a rule to select all datum planes, all the
intended planes show up on the preview, but even thought I tick the
"include sub-models" box I get the "Rules cannot be evaluated
for submodels of a Layer model." error.

I've set the propagate status.

Any help would be appreciated and I imagine all this is a bit difficult to
understand from my description, so please let me know if you need more
information.

I'm still having trouble with this issue. I thought the whole idea of the layer rules is that it allows features to be selected throughout an assembly, so surely "Rules cannot be evaluated for submodels of a Layer model." defeats the half the point?
