leather texture - regarding

Dear all

I have a model(Pen drive top and bottom housing), whose surface to be actually textured similar to leather finish(2d textured using picture already done and after rendering it looks like 3d image, but real 3d texture finish required).
Note :

The final product(sample) to be printed using any 3d printer, so after printing we have to feel the leather finish appearance over the top and bottom housing. Is it possible, if so, how is it possible in Proengineer wildfile 3.0, please help me out.

To the best of my knowledge, What You MODEL is What You GET. Hence for any 3D printer application, you will have to model the leather.

you do it with a bump map using a jpeg of leather. Light spots on the image will create a light spot on the Pro/E model. A dark spot or streak on the image will create a dark spot on the model. This displacement will not affect the model but will effect how the model looks. Displacement from a jpeg that effects the model is only available in Maya and 3d Max types of programs. We do it to make tires all the time.

Thanks Mr. Bart

I did the same thing, it is possible by using a jpeg of
leather, but it is a 2d illusion if we render, but my
requirement is to do really 3d impression of leather
effect over the surface of the part to a depth of 0.1 mm.
So, from your answer, it is not possible in proe to do
so, am i correct?

My question is if we create part in proe and is it
possible to give the leather texture(real 3d impression)
effect using maya and 3d Max. One more request, can you
send me some samples of leather texture done in maya or
3d max

thanks srini

I have these textures already with me.

I want these textures to be applied on proe parts, not as images but it should be a real appearance over the part.

If it is possible in maya or 3d max, just show me some samples

Thanks & Regards
Rajasekar. N

You can try Okino's 3D converter and Translator solutions for ProE. You can use 3rd Party vendor integrations in conjunction with ProE including 3Ds max.

You will need to model the texture yourself. What you can do (since you already have the picture on the surface) is to sketch curves in shaded mode following the voids in the picture and cut your .1mm grooves. This will be very time consuming and a very heavy model but it may be your only option.

I agree with krow72. I once had a need to add knurling and threads fora prototype to be displayed and played with. I added them using extrude-cuts, sweeps, etc. It was very time consuming, and in the end, we did not gain much from it;we haven't repeated that exercise.

Beforeyou choose to go that route, you should ask how necessary it is to add that detailto the 3D print, and what you aimto get from it. Maybe it would be easier to actually make the part out of real material, or maybe a combination of real materials and 3D prints.

Also, bear in mind the accuracy or resolution of the 3D printer and any finishing required after the print. I would be very annoyed putting that much effort into the model only to find out that the machine can't make something that detailed. We had a relatively cheapmachine thatboasted something like 0.003-0.005 inches in three dimensions for small parts. However,a parthad to melt off support wax after printing. We found it was difficult to get rid ofthe wax in grooves only 0.005 inches wide.
