Master model error?

Hello All, I'm trying toget parts from a master model I've created. I read thru CadTrains demo of creating parts from master model but everytime I get to a certain point I get the same error over and over...."The selected entity is external. It cannot be backed up."

I created an assy' called dummy.asm

I created a part called merge within the assy using a start part

I assemble the merge part into the dummy.asm

I then add my master model to the assy, assembling it to the default dtm planes of the merge part.

With the assy active I click 'edit' / 'component operations' / and 'merge'

I select the merge part as the part to perform the process to and the master as the reference part.

As soon as I select my master model as the ref. part I get the error? Any help is greatly appreciated.
