Metric conversion

Has anyone experienced their company switching from Standard to Metric measurement? <?:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" />
How does this affect the design cycle and how does it affect the legacy parts and drawings?

The company I used to work for switched from inch to metric design in the early '90's. Lots of old parts still in inches, but the assemblies were okay. We were using UG when they did the switch.

Switched to Pro/E in 2003. All new designs in metric. Old machines were still in inch, but any new componnets were in metric. One product line went from inch AutoCad to metric Wildfire.

You can mix & match parts designed in inch and metric in Pro/E, the software does not care. We have some products designed in metric and some designed in inch because the tooling and gauges were brought in from outside.

If you want to change the units of a part it is very easy 99% of the time. Just go to edit/setup/units and change them, pick same size option. The only time there is a problem is if you have a parameter or relation which must be manually changed. In some cases you may want to just change the displayed units in the drawings. This can be done easily by just changing the the drawing option dual_dimensions to secondary.

I used to work for a major manufactuer that made pagers and cell
phones. name withheld ;) that used both metric and imperial on
their detail drawings. All as if the Chinese cant do the
math. What exactly are you refering to by Legacy?
Pro/E don't care 25.4 mm is the same as 1" and like dr_gallup says mixing
metric and imperial does not confuse anything inside Pro/E at all.
