Model & Drawing Previews

Hi Guys, I know I am probably in the wrong forum for this but I dont like venturing into the other forums, there a bit too scary for me so I am hoping my modelling friends I have got to know so well will help me

When I created models and saved them, I would go back to "Open" and the model preview would not show up ( a real pain when there are 100`s of models to go through ) I managed to get around this and now that works fine.


What I still cant manage to get working are the drawings, I still get the message : Preview Not Available. I have searched the net and found only answers similar to that below but having tried setting that config option to all of them it still does not work. Can anyone help me get a drawing preview ?

The message "Preview Not Available" appears when attempting to preview a drawing.

The drawing file should be saved in Pro/ENGINEER with config.pro option "save_drawing_picture_file" set to "export", "embed" or "both".

This works for me if WF2:

save_drawing_picture_file embed

I don't know that this will do what you want, but you might give it a try:

Thanks for the help guys but I have tried both and still get " Preview Not Available ". I will try to get to the bottom of this and let you all know the outcome.

You can set all preview options to yes for drawings and it all works well for drawings you explicitly save while they're on screen. But, if you exit ProE (at least version 2001) and ProE comes and asks you "do you want to save X, do you want to save Y, ..." then no preview of any drawing is saved. It looks like ProE stores a screendump and isn't smart enough to generate one in the background when there's no window.


One of the many "user friendly" features I guess.

Hi Again guys,


Yes that works ! It was me being stupid

Well not really, I have saved the config option as I first thought to : save_drawing_picture_file embed. However, the display will only show after a drawing has been saved since this file is set, i.e It will NOT show older drawings that were saved prior to the config setting was changed.


I have gone back to some older drawings, opened them and simply saved them, now the preview works.
