model gundam robots with soldiworks

hi im interested in modeling gundam type robots like the picture i attached , (which was modeled in lightwave), and then making protoypes of them, or moulds.. i just wanted to know if solidworks is a good software for this kind of modeling, and modeling with lots of curves and stuff... or is lightwave 3ds max and maya better choices.. assuming that those software have dimension features,so i can make a prototype..

That geometry all starts out as a polygon or Sub'd type surface. Modeling that in Solidoworks is much more of an effort... certainly not impossible. The shading used in your image is a flat 'metal ray' material render.Do some research on Polygon and or Sub'D modeling. Its really cool stuff.I suggest modeling in Maya then convert that geometry into Nurbs surface for export out to a software like Solidworks... Pro/ENGINEER or another solid modeler for prototyping.

If your really good at Solidworks you could try to model that geometry. "You would use curves projected onto surfaces as trajectories and use many four part boundaries that form tangencies to other surfaces to capture the forum. There is a good talk board at core77.com that has a could hundred toy professionals discussing such things. I suggest posting your question over there, as I would be curious what they suggest.

That type of robot modeling is a trend started several years ago BTW.That little character has the markings from the movie Tron 1980...

Another Robot form. This one from our one week maya
class is created the same way except using Maya.
Notice the flat shading and softshadows. The dude
climbs the latter to get inside.

Modo is another software program you might try. Modo is getting quite a bit of attention in the industry.
