Modeling a Tire Tread

For those of you that have modeled tires, do you: use a texture and bump maps for the tread pattern or do you model a tread instance then pattern it around the tire? How do you handle tread pattern?

make a rectangular extrusion that is as long as the circumference of the tire, create your tread cuts on it, and then toroidal bend to deform the tire according to the shape of the tire cross section.

Toroidal bend is OK but after the bend I can't get anything to attach to the bent tread --whether it's a protrusion or a revolve. Is there a solutionto thisproblem? The image below is actually an assembly of the tread (toroidal bend) and base revolve.

I finally got toroidal bend to work properly and to avoid problems i revolve things like the sidewalls in after the bend. seems to work for me. I was able to project a datum curve on to the tread surface after the blend but i haven't gone further than that.

I found this model that uses toroidal bend feature like most people here suggests. I think this feature is for cosmetics design. I never use it before. Hope it helps.

I have WF3, not sure WF2 can open it. It should.

I have couple of quick questions. In your earlier post you mentioned about tire cross sectional area. Do you by any chance have the CAD data for a radial tire? and if so can you please share that with me?

I am in the process of modeling a tire for my research and this would really help me.

Thanks much,
VJ

Unfortunately I don't. I modeled this when I worked for a company and no longer have access to that data. I kept a few images here and there.
