Our business partner strongly recommends Oracle DB for a new PDMLink/ProjectLink implementation. We are more familiar with MS SQL Server. Is there an obvious best choice here? We are a 7 seat Pro E shop.
Windchill has been on Oracle forever, and support for SQL Server was just added earlier this year. So there is a much longer track record on Oracle. All development and probably most testing is also done on Oracle.
SQL Server is cheaper than Oracle, but that is about the only compelling reason to go that route. Other than the initial installation and setting up backup scripts, there isvery little administration required for either database. So familiarity of one over the other should not strongly influence your decision.
If you are on Intralink 3.x today, there is no migration supportfor SQL Server based Windchill. This is supposed to be supported early next year, but even then the path will be Intralink 3.x -> Oracle based Windchill -> Sql Server based Windchill.
BTW - The migration tool provided by PTCfor Intralink 3.x-> Oracle based Windchill is very good. I work for a PTC reseller andhave done numerous migrations using this tool.
