"Name", "File Name", "Number"

We just migrated from Intralink 3.3 to PDMLink 8.0. It seems that parts that were "duplicated" in Intralink, held onto the old "name", and the "number" is what we had renamed the duplicated objects to. When working in your workspace, it seems that the only attribute that is relavant is "file name", but that doesn't seem to show up when browsing through the folders. When you create a new part in Pro/E and save it, the name that you give it shows up as the "file name", and there isn't a number until it is uploaded, and then it makes the number the same as the "file name".

I've tried to open the cad documents and doing a rename to them, but it won't let me change the "file name" or "number", only the "name". How crazy is that? Supposedly, the consultant who did our migration has a call into PTC about it, but who knows......

Just a brief rundown on PDMLink 8.0. Perhaps stuff you already know, but good to know if not.

1. File Name in Pro/E= File Name in PDM Link (Windchill)

2. Common Name in Pro/E (if you have one) = Name in PDMLink

3. Number is only assigned when you check-in to PDMLink

The "standard" setup for PDMLink is to have the Number = Filename. The other option is to set the number as an autonumber. The number HAS to be unique in PDMLink.

Another setup only allows certain people to rename. If you don't have edit privilidge you can't change the filename.

Also a tip as you are new to PDMLink. There is a column setting that is called" Compare Status" Turn it on. Not only does it tell you that a new file you've got in your workspace has the same name as an existing file in PDMLink (in other words, change it or it won't check in), but it also tells you if the version you have in your workspace is out of date (a newer version exists in Windchill)

Another tip: Although it may take a few more seconds, I ALWAYS check in files from the workspace, not the "file/check-in". You know for sure if it actually checked-in this way.

Also, pay attention to the little icon on the bottomright (1/3 from the right). It will show problems with check-in/checkout. If it's red, click on it. Get use to looking for it, or you could end up spending hours working on files you thought you checked in, when it actually didn't.

Also, beware the "continue" option upon checkout. Continue is nice, in that it allows you to look as "play" with files that you don't have permission to checkout, but they show up as new files that you CAN NOT check back in.

Perhaps this thread isnt' the best, but I thought you'd like to know some things we learned the hard way.

Noted!! Thanks!!

I have created a Table View for all the users that shows only the file name, status, type, actions, workspace column status, version, and compare status. Everyone breathed a sigh of relief with that. I'm trying to find something similar to do with the Product Folders, but it's proving a little more complex.

Thanks again.
