naming parameters

I have a part file that has a parameter which controls the overall length. That parameter is called "xlength". My question is, "Can I insert that part file into an assembly file where Icould create another parameter that controls overall length & call it "xlength"? Or do I have to stay with an individual naming convention like xlength-1, xlength-2 and so on?

Every part & assembly can have exactly the same parameter (xlength or anything else). Pro/E uses a session ID to keep them separate. If you want to tie them together in an assembly you can write relations like :

xlength:2=xlength:1-12
