Need to Model Internal NPT Thread

New@ProE

New member
Hello Pro's,

Find myself needing to Create/Model a 1/4" Internal NPT Thread into the end of a 1-1/2" shaft with a 7/16" Pilot hole thru the length. I relaize I will need to make two opposite cuts using a Helical Sweep. Can anyone tell me where I can find a tutorial or article to help me accomplish what I need, or can any of you Super ProE guru's explain a step by step to get me close enough?

Would appreciate any help --Ignorance is NOT Bliss . . .

if You do not have to create geometry for thread use Cosmetic feature.

To make NPTF in cosmetic you should first change config.pro

allow_udf_style - yes -- I suppose it is like that, then You can sketch your thread line

I haven't used a UDF cosmetic thread before. How is it different than a std cosmetic thread? Will the end result look like threads or a simplified view of an NPT Thread?

this option is for cosmetic thread

normaly cosmetics thread are used to simplify geometry, it is rather an option or special case to model thread as geom - they are hard to regenerate, they are to detailed and they usually create many problems while making DMU(Save as>Shrinkwrap)

so normaly You need a thread for drawing, so then the cosmetic option is accurate

ok, let`s take it furhter, I hope You are not bored yet

in normal case, while creating cosmetc threads you are not prompted to sketch them only to put start surf and dia dim, the rest is done by system. And system does not allow you to manipulate the thread surf shape, because it is Pro\e internal udf.

So by changing the option allow_udf_style_cosm_threads to Yes, You will find new window while creating thread. You will be prompted to choose type of cosmetic.

After You made it all, You will see in model tree that there is posibility to change thread sketch and this is what You are looking for

maudib3d,

Thanks for explaining...Now you have peeked my interest! Since the thread in question will be NPT instead of straight thread, will I still be able to use the "UDF" function? If so, is there a particularly good thread/topic on the Forum (or tutorial) that will help me thru the process?

Thanks again,

first - if You want to know details about NPTF, search them in US norms

second - I switch the option alow_udf_style... to Yes only when I need it. Usually I do not create NPTF thread, they are not so much popular in Europe.

So when I need to create NPTF I just turn this option on, make a thread, and then turn it off

If I have already existing model with NPTF thread I just copy feature to another model, picking all necesary refs and change the sketch of thread surf to demanded one

This is how I deal with NPTFs
