over mold help.

What is the recommended way to represent an over molded part?

I have a plastic part that has three metal pins that are molded in place, then a second shot mold for a gasket. This part only has one part number. We will not be ordering it in any other configuration.

What is the best way to model this?

I would make an assembly of the plastic part, the 3 pins & the gasket. Then create a drawing of the assembly.

I teach in my plastic part design workshop to utilize top down design and segregate the rubber from plastic for example with surface offsets.

I guess i could go into more details if you want to hear more. My examples are usually more ergonomic with free form surfaces.

Agree, an assembly is a good route to go and depending on your part numbering system the sub-comps could be named differently. For example:

12345.asm&nb sp;&nb sp;&nb sp; 12345.drw

12345_comp1.prt (Plastic Part)

12345_comp2.prt (Pin)

12345_comp2.prt (Pin)

12345_comp2.prt (Pin)

12345_comp3.prt (Gasket)
[/list]
