Part numbers, file names, and properties

I may be going about this in the wrong direction because I am used to using Pro/e.

We are planning on naming our files with both the part number and description. For example:

SR021204 Widget, Nifty.SLDPRT

We are using the PartNo property to contain the part number. If the
file name was just the part number, I could easily make the PartNo
property equal to the file name. Is there a way to have it only include
the first part of the file name rather than the whole thing?

The reason I want to do this is so that we only have to change the
part number in one place (the file name) and have everything update.
This will help us as we rename or copy things.

I plan to use the PartNo property on the drawing on BOM tables.

If there is a better way for me to accomplish this, please let me
know. Naming with only the part number is not an option at this time.

Am I wrong to equate the properties such as PartNo to Pro/E parameters? Can I write equations to update the properties? Is there something else I should be doing?

I do know if we have to manually type in the part number it will not get changed when the part number in the file name changes.

Thanks,
Carrie

Don't change the file name as it will screw references in the sub and main assemblies. Unless you have mastered Explorer and have time to redirect the assembly's to the correct file name and make sure the mates are correct. Change the the part no in the properties or create a custom propertice and call it an IRN number. It far easyier to set change a properties than a file name. Been there done that got the t-shirt.

Note you should really set your filing system up before you start drawing parts so you know what to save the parts as and standardise it through put the project. it not hard to do but it takes a little time and dicipline.

If you change a property in a part for it to show in the bom you need to open the assembly up and allow it to up date it should then drop down in to the bom if you have link the part no to proptie in the part not the sheet.
