Reference patterns

Anyone know what the error "Including pattern by reference must also include its reference." means?

I am trying to create a UDF with a part and its corresponding bolts (which are patterned with a reference pattern on the part holes). The bolts are only assembled to the comppnent which I am including in the UDF. When I try to select the component and its bolts, I get the error above.

I then tried to group the components, thinking that if I could group them, it might be easier to make a UDF. When I try to group the component and the bolt pattern, I get the same error. The only references that the bolts have is on the one component! (2 references: mate between bolt and component, and align axis between bolt and component). What is going on?? Why can't I group these?

The UDF won't understand how to place the pattern of the bolt. You need to really add the UDF for the unpatterned bolt. To do this, you can unpattern first (making sure not to save your assembly), create the UDF and then patterning after placement will be an easy task. Remove from session if necessary and open bcak up. Alternative method is to rename this assembly temporarily in session only (and not on disk), bring in your assembly again and remove the temp assy from session. I use this if the assembly has many parts which I don't want to have to open up from scratch again.

I guess I'll have to unpattern them. Thanks for the response. Hooray to PTC for another crappy programming award.

This really wouldn't be a big deal, but since I'm actually usingthis UDF to assemble about a hundred components, about 20 of which have reference patterns, this becomes a major PITA.
