Renaming Files outside of PDM

Hey all, I am currently working on a project were some files have been controlled within PDM for a while, working offsite and outside of PDM I need to rename these but get the message that says I cannot rename a part file that is controlled by a PDM system. Is there a way around this and rename the parts within ProE.
