Well, you can't merge them because the arced surface doesn't fully intersect the other quilt.
I'd extend the vertical walls of the base quilt so that it is tal enough to envelop the arc, then merge. You may need to make a copy of all the surfaces of the base quilt except teh top (or redefine the feature that created it) so that you can extend the vertical surfaces.
You could also solidify the base quilt and then use replace.
thanks again. it was a simple example to show what i meant. the one on the right is a solidify and a replace. it falls in the "challenging" category of the workaround.
