Replacing models with Family Members

I made copies of components in an assembly by using a family table. All was fine, they replaced with no remating. I saved and reopened the same day and all was well (this was Friday). Today, I come in and the assembly can't find the family members; it searches for the name and finds it (the default highlighted name shows up) but it still doesn't accept it. Any clues?

two or more generic parts with the same name in different folders ?
The load sequence is
- memory
- working folder
- search paths
once the part is found, the search stops

My problem is this: I had apart that was in several unrelated assemblies. I wanted to rename this part without having to open the numerous assemblies it was placed in. I didn't want to replace the partas an unrelated componentand have to remate all the mates of all the parts so i made a family and named it what i needed it to be and replaced the original part with the family member. Now, Pro/e CAN find the original part and the new family member (the search '*part*') finds the part, but it gives me an error message stating something to the effect (?) of "this ain't the part"
