save a copy of an family table instance

If you save a copy of an instance from a family table does it reference the generic model? From what I can tell a generic model of a family table is just what it says a generic model. The generic is basic geometry of a part and an instance is a new part of the generic with modifications to it. So when I save a copy of an instance I am copying a part which is created using words and notcad tools.Am I seeing this right?

If you save a copy of an instance the new part is not an instance, it is a new stand alone part with no relationship to the original generic.
If you want to create another instance you have to edit the family table of the generic.
