select multiple adjacent surfaces?

Is there a quick way in Wildfire 4.0 to pick (select) many surfaces that are adjacent to each other on a solid model? I am trying change the color hundreds of tiny surfaces that are in the same area of the model (Using "View/Color and APpearances"), but have to pick each surface one by one... Thanks.

There are a few quick select methods.

select one surface, then shift select an edge. (this gets all the ones directly touching)

seed & boundry = select an edge to be included, then shift select the boundary surface. (this gets all surfaces up to the boundary)

In this case, is it going to be easier to color the whole part, then change a couple surfaces separately, instead of selecting individuals first?
