Setting sketcher area

gimmejava

Guys,
I'd like to be able to set up my sketcher area based on my
typical part size that I design. Most parts I design are small, since
I work in the electronics/aerospace industry. When I enter sketcher
mode, a rectangle I sketch may be 550 x 300 (for example). I'd like
to set up my sketcher environment so that when i go to sketch, the part
dimension will be more in the area of 20 x 8 or so. I remember an
instructor several years ago touching on this, but I cannot remember
for the life of me how to do it. Thanks in advance.

One thing you can do is have a start part that has the default datum sizes to something more your needs.

Edit defination of the datum plane >display> Adjust outline> width & height>ok

still makes a long extrusion for first feature...how do you cahnge the default 216.51 value??

The easiest way will be to activate this config sketcher_refit_after_dim_modify and when you sketch your first feature draw a circle, give it a radius close to what the dimensions will be and it will be automatically resized, and the planes will be resized too. Then you can delete the circle. This option of resizing the sketch, can be anoying sometimes, because afterevery dimension that you modify the sketch gets refit.

Or you don't activate this option, and again sketch a circle give it a dimension close to your dimensions and hit the refit to screen button.

I put a hidden sketched circle of appropriate size as the last feature in my template models. It is named DELETE_ME to remind people to delete it after they create some features of size.

If you are going to modify the dimensions anyway then what you are trying to do is pointless.

You can always use the modify tool and lock scale.
