Sinusoidal Path on Surface of Cylinder

sinusoid

New member
Using intersection curve, I have produced a sinusoidal path on the surface of
a cylinder and using sweep cut, I was able to cut a rectangular channel
along the path.
The problem I am having is that the channel does not have a constant width
because the rectangular sketch I am using as a profile to cut with seems to
traverse and slide laterally as it follows the cut path, instead of turning to
always stay normal to the path and create equal width channel. I have tried
multiple combinations of guide curves and swept cut options with no luck.
Help is appreciated.

Can you add a secondary guide rail "offset" from the first to control the rotation of the rectangular sketch?

In other words, if the center of the rectangle is following the cut path, the second "guide rail" that I'm suggesting would be controlling one of the CORNERS of the rectangle thereby causing it to rotate around as it is swept.

Clear as mud?

Thanks for the response Joe.

One thing we haven't tried is guiding the profile from the center, it has
always been on the corners. Although we have tried multiple combinations
of second guide rails on various corners of the profile. Do you think that we
need to specify specific relationships between the guide rails and profile?

I will give your advice a shot and will update on the progress. Thanks!

With out actually seeing what you're getting vs what you want, it's hard to say what exactly is going on. Could you upload a picture or two?

If you're already using cornersof the sketch attached toguide rails, I have to conclude that my idea was/is irrelevent. I think we need to see more...

If you haven't done already I would provide a pierce contraint between the corner of the cutout profile and the swept path. By the sound sof it you have only added a coincidnt constraint though I could be wrong. My initial attempet would be to use the corners and have 2 guide curves which should work.

Try the pierce constraint anyway and see how it goes.
