Skeleton model mass properties

SW

New member
I tend to model using skeleton parts, but to cut down on the
need to copy geometry between parts, I often use the skeleton as an actual part
with solid geometry. I then create surface features to copy to secondary parts.
It works pretty well and reduces the number of references I need to manage.
However, I've just discovered that the assembly mass properties doesn't include
the skeleton model. Is there a way to change this behavior? - I can't find a
config option.

Thanks,

Sam

No, by definition skeletons have no mass, even if you include solid geometry in them.

You're using skeleton models for the right reason -- to consolidate common geometry used by multiple components and to control external references for simple propagation of geometry changes -- but as skeletons are intended as "imaginary" parts that you would never manufacture (or include on a BOM), their solid geometry does not contribute to mass properties of the assembly.

Thanks David.

I suppose I can carrying on doing it this way, just create a new part in the assembly and create a solid surfaces copy geom feature. I was trying to avoid the need for the extra part, but I guess it won't add much more complications.
